REEK short dance film

Part of the Environmental Dance Project, Reek explores the fragile and complex relationship between humanity and nature.

A dancer struggles for breath in a dump, her body covered in dust and dirt, trapped in an environment of suffocation. In contrast, we see her moving freely in the desert, mountains, sea, and forest—spaces where she reconnects with nature and harmony. The film juxtaposes destruction and renewal, fragility and resilience, raising a silent yet urgent question: Can we reclaim our harmony with the natural world?

Based in Germany, the Environmental Dance Project is a global initiative that makes climate change tangible and visible through the synergy of dance, scientific data, and personal testimonies from around the world. The project explores how embodied knowledge from diverse dance cultures can inspire more sustainable and respectful ways of engaging with nature and ecosystems.

By bringing together contemporary dancers from different countries, the project examines traditional forms—such as harvest dances, animal dances, and rain rituals—alongside innovative artistic practices at the intersection of environmental activism, sustainability, and somatics. These encounters foster new ecological approaches in dance and highlight its potential as a catalyst for social change.

Dance, one of humanity’s most primal forms of expression, offers performers and audiences alike a reflective, conscious connection to the ecosystem. In this sense, it becomes a medium to shift perspectives—from an anthropocentric worldview toward a holistic understanding of all life forms as equal—contributing to the search for harmony with our planet.
